Abiotic alterations caused by forest fragmentation affect tree regeneration: a shade and drought tolerance gradient in the remnants of Coastal Maulino Forest RChHN
GUERRERO,PABLO C; BUSTAMANTE,RAMIRO O.
Plant regeneration is strongly determined by light and soil moisture differences between habitáis; both variables are modified by large-scale forest fragmentation. Several studies have indicated this alteration as the mechanism involved in tropical forest community change. The effects of fragmentation may be much more severe in Mediterranean and deciduous forests, because plant species in these forests show a stress tolerance tradeoff between shade and drought. Our study was performed in the deciduous fragmented Coastal Maulino Forest: Reserva Nacional Los Queules (RNLQ) and surrounding small fragments. We hypothesised that Aristotelia chilensis (shade intolerant but drought tolerant) should increase its regeneration in small patches as a consequence of...

Achene dimorphism in Bidens pilosa L. (Asteraceae) as determined by germination test BABT
Amaral,Adriana; Takaki,Massanori.
The germination of achenes of Bidens pilosa L. was analyzed during the life span of the mother plant. Decrease in the range of achene size was monitored until the senescence of the mother plant when the shortest achenes were harvested. The analysis of the germination percentage confirmed the presence of two distinct classes, formerly defined as short and long ones. Because length can not be used for the separation of those classes, the morphological characteristics of the tegument, specially of the ornament must be used for separation of the achenes with verrucose tegument (formerly named as short achenes) and achenes without ornament of the tegument (formerly named as long achenes). The achenes with verrucose tegument presented dormancy and light...

'Aroeira-branca' [Lithraea molleoides (Vell.) Engl. - Anacardiaceae] seed quality evaluation by the X-ray test Scientia Agricola
Machado,Cibele Ferreira; Cícero,Sílvio Moure.
'Aroeira-branca', an arboreal species of great ecological and economic importance, is seed propagated and presents limitations with respect to the availability of methods for seed quality evaluation. The X-ray test has been considered of potential value because it is accurate, quick and nondestructive. In this context, the objective of this work was to verify the possibility of this test to detect damage and/or abnormalities in aroeira-branca embryos, in an attempt to correlate these anomalies to germination. Four seed lots were collected in different locations in the southern region of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, during 2001. The X-ray test consisted of submitting 100 seeds/lot to radiation (exposure of seeds to radiation of 13 kV/5 minutes) and...

COMPETITIVE EFFECTS OF THE ALIEN INVASIVE CENTAUREA SOLSTITIALISL. ON TWO CHILEAN BACCHARIS SPECIES AT DIFFERENT LIFE-CYCLE STAGES Gayana Botánica
Gómez-González,Susana; Cavieres,Lohengrin A; Torres,Patricio; Torres-Díaz,Cristian.
Several studies have revealed a variety of mechanisms of invasion of alien plant species. However, little is known on how those mechanisms and their associated effects on native species change across different life-cycle stages. Under controlled conditions, we assessed the interactions between the alien invasive species Centaurea solstitialis L. (Asteraceae) and two pioneer native species to the Chilean matorral; Baccharis linearis (Ruiz et Pav.) Pers. and B. paniculata DC. (Asteraceae). Competitive effects of the invader on natives were evaluated by combining different life-cycle stages: seed-seed, plant-seed, and plant-plant. Seed germination of C. solstitialis was explosive and much faster than that of the native species. The presence of C. solstitialis...

Ferreira,Paulo Henrique Gonçalves; Nunes,Yule Roberta Ferreira; Faria,Maurício Lopes; Brandão,Murilo Malveira; Costa,Cibele Stramare Ribeiro; Valério,Henrique Maia; Melo,Geraldo Aclécio; Pimenta,Marcio Antonio Silva.
ABSTRACT Seed predation is a natural phenomenon that can occur either before or after dispersal and can significantly reduce the economic value and reproductive potential of plants. The babassu palm (Attalea vitrivir, Arecaceae) is important to rural communities that extract oil from its fruits for a wide variety of uses. We evaluated the predation and germination of A. vitrivirseeds in Pandeiros River Environmental Protection Area (EPA-Pandeiros) in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Sixty individual plants were evaluated to determine their fruiting patterns. Seed predation and germination were evaluated in the natural environment for eight months for fruits divided into two treatments: scarified and intact. Germination of fruits submitted to these same...

Pacheco-Aguirre,J. Alberto; Ruíz-Sánchez,Esau; Ballina-Gómez,H. Salomón; Alvarado-López,C. Juan.
Abstract Various studies have been undertaken to evaluate the effect of polymer-based encapsulation on performance of plant growth promoting microorganism. However there is no systematic analysis about the performance of these microorganisms when encapsulated in a polymer-based matrix. Relevant published papers were retrieved by conducting searches in Google Scholar, Only Library, Science Direct, Springer Journal, Taylor & Francis and Wiley Online Library. An examination of 117 articles was carried out and of those only 11 satisfied our criteria for inclusion into the meta-analysis. From these articles, we selected 41 cases to be evaluated. We used as keywords “microcapsules”, “capsules”, “microorganisms”, “growth”, “promoting”, “germination”...

Effect of biologically treated petroleum sludge on seed germination and seedling growth of Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. (Fabaceae) BABT
Sangeetha,Jeyabalan; Thangadurai,Devarajan.
The present investigation was carried out to study the response of different concentrations of treated petroleum sludge on seed germination, root and shoot length and tolerance of Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. The biologically treated petroleum sludge with bacterial consortium showed 54.8% reduction in total petroleum hydrocarbons. Treated sludge was utilized with agricultural soil in known concentration for the assessment of growth of V. unguiculata. A remarkable absence of seed germination was observed at higher sludge concentration. The different concentrations of treated petroleum sludge showed severe decline on the length, weight and vigour index of the tested seedlings with increasing sludge concentrations. The results showed that the difference in...

Effect of light and temperature on seed germination in Tibouchina mutabilis (Vell.) Cogn. (Melastomataceae) Biota Neotropica
Simão,Edson; Takaki,Massanori.
The effect of light and temperature on Tibouchina mutabilis seed germination was analyzed by isothermic incubations in the range of 10 to 40 °C, with 5 °C intervals under both continuous white light (32.85 µmolm-2s-1) and darkness and alternating temperatures (15-20; 15-25; 15-30; 15-35; 20-25; 20-30; 20-35; 25-30; 25-35 and 30-35 °C) under both photoperiod of 12 hours and continuous darkness. The seeds of T. mutabilis need light to trigger the germination and no germination was observed in darkness. The range of optimum temperatures for germination was between 25 to 30 °C and the 20-25 °C alternating temperatures. These results indicate that T. mutabilis behaves as a pioneer species and daily alternating temperatures did not change the light sensitivity...

Effects of different temperatures on the performance of seeds germination of Cecropia pachystachya Trec. (Cecropiaceae) BABT
Pilati,Rosemari; Andrian,Izabel de Fátima; Carneiro,José W. P..
Seed germination of Cecropia pachystachya Trec. was investigated at 25, 30, and 35ºC using fluorescent day lights. Ten replicates each of 200 seeds were used in each thermal treatment. Germitest® paper, CEL-065®, and 11x11x5 cm Gerbox® were also used. The frequencies of radicle protrusions were counted at consecutive two hour intervals. The cumulative frequencies were combined with the distribution of Weibull using the following model: Y = M (1 - exp (-(t/b)c)). The best performance was achieved with the temperature of 30ºC ( M, 95.29%). Time to achieve 60.23% of seed germination (0.6321 x 95.29%) was 99.35 h with a spread of 7.19. All model/data set combinations had close to linear.

Effects of salinity on seed germination, seedling growth and survival of Spartina ciliata Brong Acta Botanica
Cordazzo,César Vieira.
The effects of different salinities on the germination of Spartina ciliata seeds were tested during 40 days in the laboratory, using six concentrations of NaCl (0,45, 80, 130, 170 and 215 mM) besides three concentrations of seawater (25,30 and 35‰). In addition, the survival and growth of seedlings were tested in five constant salinity regimes (0,45, 80 and 170 mM NaCl) as well as in five regimes of simulating seawater overwash. The results showed that seeds possed a high germination capacity over a wide range of salinities (0 to 215 mM NaCl). Although concentrations close to full-strength seawater completely inhibited seed germination, the transfer of the ungerminated seeds to freshwater immediately stimulated this. The effects of salinity on seedling...

Exploring Herbicidal Potential of Aqueous Extracts of Some Herbaceous Plants Against Parthenium Weed Planta Daninha
SAFDAR,M.E.; TANVEER,A.; KHALIQ,A.; ALI,H.H.; BURGOS,N.R..
To assess the phytotoxic potential of Achyranthes aspera, Alternanthera philoxeroides, Datura metel and Rumex dentatus against Parthenium hysterophorus, 5% (w/v on dry weight basis) aqueous extracts from root, stem, leaf, flower and whole plant were tested through a Petri plate-based germination and pot-cultured seedling bioassays. Achyranthes aspera and A. philoxeroides inhibited parthenium weed germination more than extracts from other species. Whole plant, leaf and fruit extracts of A. aspera reduced the germination percentage (5%); leaf extract from A. philoxeroides caused lower germination index (0.4), higher mean germination time (14 d) and longer time to 50% germination (13.5 d) of parthenium weed. In the foliar spray bioassay, A. aspera reduced...

In some previous studies, we described the isolation of nine compounds from leaves of Derris urucu, a species found widely in the Amazon rainforest, identified as five stilbenes and four dihydroflavonols. In this work, three of these dihydroflavonols [urucuol A (1), urucuol B (2) and isotirumalin (3)] were evaluated to identify their potential as allelochemicals, and we are also reporting the isolation and structural determination of a new flavonoid [5,3′-dihydroxy-4′-methoxy-(7,6:5″,6″)-2″,2″-dimethylpyranoflavanone (4)]. We investigated the effects of the dihydroflavonols 1-3 on seed germination and radicle and hypocotyl growth of the weed Mimosa pudica, using solutions at 150 mg.L–1. Urucuol B, alone, was the substance with the greatest potential to...

Fungi associated with Copaifera oblongifolia (Fabaceae) seeds: occurrence and possible effects on seed germination Acta Botanica
Fernandes,Elio Gomes; Valério,Henrique Maia; Duarte,Karen Luiza Rodrigues; Capuchinho,Lauany Matos de Novais; Fagundes,Marcílio.
ABSTRACT Copaifera oblongifolia is a recurrent plant species in degraded areas yet there is little information about its seed biology and interactions with fungi. The aims of this study were to identify the fungal community (endophytic and non-endophytic) associated with C. oblongifolia seeds and to test the effects of these different fungal species on germination. In general, germination of C. oblongifolia seeds was high (about 85 %), initiating four days after sowing and continuing for a total of 20 days. External asepsis with sodium hypochlorite did not influence germinability of C. oblongifolia. Seed infestation with Aspergillus niger, A. flavus, Mucor sp. and Rhizopus stolonifer did not affect the time required for germination, however, infection with...
